Mix
99.3, SSU, and "Wendy's Old Fashioned Rock and Roll House
Party" Rock the Riffe for year 17!
Saturday
night, April 9th marks the 17th installment of an event
that has become one of the longest in the nation featuring
authentic rock n' roll. Since the shows debut on April 8th,
2000, the stage of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts in
Portsmouth, Ohio has been the rostrum for over 265 million
selling recordings all sung by the original artists.
This
year's lineup will bring with them yet another golden cadre
of hits that will bump that total up considerably. Between
the two, they kept the music charts burning red hot throughout
the 60's and 70's with some of pop/rock music's biggest
icon songs.
Tommy
James and the Shondell's first appeared at House Party
III appearing with Wilson Pickett on a night that saw the
show begin at 8:00 pm, and not end until the crack of 1:00
am. The buzz of Tommy's great performance and his cooperation
to do anything to bring the show home that night earned
him a special spot of favor from all the fans. As one of
pop music's true style innovators, his hits of yesterday
are still the favorites of today. "Hanky Panky,"
"Mony Mony," "Crystal Blue Persuasion,"
"Sweet Cherry Wine," "I Think We're
Alone now," "Mirage," "Crimson
and Clover," "Draggin' The Line,"
and many others have all been covered by more than 300 artists.
B.J.
Thomas has long been considered one of the best singular
voices in all of modern music. As the only artist with a
Grammy Award in pop, country, and gospel, his style of selling
a song is simply hypnotic to the buyer. First hitting the
charts in 1965 with "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry,"
B.J.'s parade of classics is all a part of music Americana.
"Hooked on a Feeling," "Raindrops Keep
Falling on My Head," "I Just Can't Help Believin,"
"Most of All," "Rock n' Roll Lullabye,"
"Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song"
and so many other great signature songs have insured that
his name is eternally enshrined in popular music's guest
book of greatness.
Tommy
James and the Shondell's along with B.J. Thomas
